Things people wonder about

When does a locksmith decide to drill instead of pick?

Drilling is the last rung, reached only when the cylinder has genuinely stopped cooperating. Typical reasons are a plug seized by corrosion or a failed spring, a key snapped deep inside that blocks the pins, a high-security cylinder whose anti-pick features make picking impractical, or a lock already damaged by someone's earlier attempt. The decision is explained before the drill comes out, the hole is confined to the cylinder, and replacement hardware goes in straight afterwards. Home Lockout Service

We have just taken over a unit and have no keys for the old locks. Is that a lockout?

It is treated as one, with the same authority check: your new lease and identification settle it. The locksmith opens the previous occupant's locks, then rekeys or replaces them so keys still floating around from the last tenant stop working. It is also the moment to decide how the unit will be keyed: one key for every door, separate keys for the cash office and stockroom, or cores that suit a growing staff. Business Lockout Service

Can the piece be pushed out from the other side?

On a standard door cylinder the keyway is closed at the back by the plug and the tailpiece, so there is no straight path through. What a locksmith can do is remove the cylinder, take off the cap, and push the plug out of its housing with a follower, which frees the fragment from behind. That is done on the bench, not by forcing anything from the inside of the door. Broken Key Extraction

How do I check that the repair is holding over the following months?

Once a month for the first season, throw the deadbolt with the door closed and feel for drag or a stop short of full extension, and press on the strike and hinge screws with a screwdriver to confirm they are snug. Repeat at each change of season, since wood moves with humidity. A door that starts needing a shoulder, or a bolt that catches on the strike lip, wants a small adjustment early rather than a repeat of the original problem. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

How often should locks be rekeyed?

There is no calendar for it. What matters is who holds a key, not how many years have passed. Think about it when occupancy changes hands, when someone who had a key no longer needs one, or when a ring goes missing along with something that shows where you live. Between those moments a well-kept cylinder may need no scheduled care, and when it does, use whatever that cylinder's maker specifies. With the doors already on one recorded system, any repeat is a short piece of work. Lock Rekeying

What about glass beside the door or a window in it?

Glass within reach of the lock is the one case where a plain thumb-turn deserves thought. Options include a captive thumb-turn that turns freely until you remove its small key, laminated glass or a tested security-film system with its specified frame attachment, or simply setting the bolt farther from the glass. Lock manufacturers describe sidelights as a weak point, so the locksmith measures the reach and lays out the choices rather than defaulting to a key on the inside. Deadbolt Installation

Will a new lock fit the holes already in my door?

Usually, yes. Most residential doors are prepared to standard sizes, a 54 millimetre cross bore and a backset of 60 or 70 millimetres, and most modern hardware adjusts between those backsets. The locksmith measures before choosing, so the new lock is matched to the door rather than the other way around. Where an older mortise lock or an unusual bore is found, filler plates, extension kits or a carefully jigged new bore bring the door to standard. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

My home is a designated heritage property. Does that change anything?

It reinforces the choice to service rather than replace. Where a property carries a heritage designation, changes affecting listed features can need extra sign-off, and original door hardware is occasionally among those features. A rebuilt mortise case with its original trim is preservation rather than alteration, and the locksmith's written record of what was retained and what was replaced is useful for your file. High Security Locks

When does a locksmith decide to drill a safe instead of opening it another way?

Drilling is chosen when the gentler options for that specific lock, manipulation and decoding on a mechanical dial, or a manufacturer reset or override on an electronic one, are unavailable or have not worked, rather than following one fixed order on every safe. It is also the answer when the lock has genuinely failed, such as a seized wheel pack or a dead circuit board with no working override. The decision is explained before drilling starts, not discovered afterward. Safe Opening & Combination Change

How often does the battery need replacing on an electronic lock?

Most electronic locks give a low-battery warning, usually a beep or flashing light, well before they actually stop working, and replacing the battery within that same week is the safer habit rather than waiting. Depending on how often the safe is opened, a battery commonly lasts somewhere between one and several years, and keeping a spare of the correct type near the safe avoids a search once the warning starts. Safe Installation & Servicing

What actually makes a lock high security?

Three things working together. The cylinder has a second locking mechanism, usually a sidebar released by finger pins or rotating pins, plus hardened steel in the path of a drill, so picking, bumping and drilling take far longer than on an ordinary lock. The deadbolt and strike are heavier and fastened into the framing. And the key is cut on a patented or restricted blank that only an authorised person can have copied. Remove any one and the door is weaker than the label suggests. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks

Do I need my landlord's consent before rekeying my unit?

Read the lease, because that is where the answer lives. Commercial tenancies are governed mostly by the lease itself, and many leases require the tenant to tell the landlord when locks change, to provide a key for emergencies, or to use the landlord's approved locksmith. Doors on the building's master system, such as corridor or service doors, are normally the landlord's to change. Bring the lease to the assessment and the locksmith will sort the doors accordingly. Commercial Rekeying

What is a restricted keyway and do I need one?

A restricted or patented keyway limits who can cut a copy of your keys to whoever holds the manufacturer's authorization record, rather than any hardware counter. It suits doors behind which cash, records or controlled supplies sit. A standard keyway is simpler to administer and works well for lower-risk doors where duplication control matters less. Master Key System Design

Who keeps administrative control of the software after installation?

The business does. Handover includes a full administrator account with the ability to add and revoke credentials, change schedules, and pull an entry log, confirmed working before the locksmith leaves. Whether the installer keeps any support or portal access beyond that is a setting agreed with the business, not a fixed feature of every system, so it is worth confirming as part of that handover. Access Control Installation

Can exit hardware be styled to match the rest of the building's finishes?

Yes, within what the door's rating allows. Exit devices and their trim come in a range of finishes to sit alongside other door hardware in the building, and outside trim in particular, being the visible part from a public side, can be chosen to match levers or pulls used elsewhere. A fire-rated opening narrows the finish choice somewhat, since the whole assembly has to stay within its listing. Panic & Exit Hardware

Two adults discussing a key fob beside a parked car. — Car Lockout Service, Pickering

Car Keys

My wallet, permit and everything else are locked inside. What then?

That is the ordinary case, and there is a routine for it. Tell the locksmith on the phone so the plan is agreed in advance. Often the plate can be matched to a photo of the permit on your phone, a family member can bring identification, or a fleet manager can confirm a company vehicle. Otherwise the door is opened and the documents in the glovebox are checked against your identification before the locksmith leaves. Car Lockout Service

Can you make a key if every key to the car is gone?

Often, yes, for vehicles with a supported conventional key system: the car is opened, a blade is produced by decoding the door lock or retrieving the factory key code, and the immobilizer is reset so the missing keys are erased before new ones are stored. A key-card or phone-key vehicle, or one needing a dealer procedure, follows its own route instead, which is why the VIN is asked for on the first call. Car Key Replacement

What should I bring to the appointment?

Bring the vehicle, its existing key, photo identification, and something that ties you to the vehicle: registration, or a document showing you are authorized to hold a key if the car belongs to someone else, such as an employer or a family member. Knowing the VIN in advance, printed or photographed from the door jamb, also helps the locksmith confirm the exact key system before arriving. Spare Car Key Duplication

Can you program a fob for a new driver without touching the fobs we already use?

Yes. Adding a fob for another driver joins it to the vehicle's accepted list alongside the fobs already there, and on many vehicles the ones already in daily use are not re-registered or disturbed in the process, though some procedures need every fob present and re-registered together. Each fob keeps its own identity in the vehicle's memory even though they all operate the same doors and engine. Key Fob Programming
