Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Stay somewhere warm and safe while you wait, such as a neighbour's or your car.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Keep ID that shows your address handy if it is with you.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
  2. Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
  2. Skip the oil, the glue and the hot water. They make it worse.

Houses in Fairport collect locks over the years: a front door from one decade, a side entry from another, a garage door that takes its own key. We rekey them all to a single key so the ring in your pocket finally gets lighter, and set up a spare that lives somewhere sensible.

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceAfter a week of humid weather the back door has swollen in its frame.

The fix

Most lockouts end with the original lock still on the door and still working. That is the point of professional entry: picks, tension tools, decoders and latch tools are designed to operate the mechanism the way a key would, without cutting or prying anything.

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceA cook stepped into the alley with the recycling and the rear door swung shut behind him.

The fix

On a commercial door the lock is rarely alone. A door contact feeds the alarm panel, a card reader drives an electric strike or a magnetic lock, and a monitoring company is watching for an opening outside business hours.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionIn the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door.

The fix

Freezing is one of the bigger seasonal causes of broken keys here. Meltwater runs into the keyway during a thaw and freezes overnight, so the plug is locked in ice, and most people respond by turning harder.

EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairSomeone smashed the little window beside the door, reached in and turned the thumb-turn.

The fix

A failed break-in is still a repair. When a lock holds against a pry bar or a kick, the force goes somewhere: a strike plate bends, screws loosen, the door edge takes a gouge, the deadbolt binds where the bolt met the strike under load.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningIt is the coldest morning of the winter and the key goes halfway into the side door and stops.

The fix

A jammed lock looks like one problem from outside and is usually one of three inside. The cylinder itself may have seized, packed with grit, corrosion or old grease.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyThe spare under the planter by the side door is gone.

The fix

The first useful move after losing a key is to think about where it worked rather than where it went. A house key commonly opens more than the front door: the back door, a side entrance, the door from the garage into the house, a shed, a gate padlock, sometimes a storage room or a mailbox.

A working lock before we go

The gentlest opening that works. Most doors can be picked or bypassed with no damage. We start there and only move to a firmer method if the lock leaves no other choice, explaining as we go.

A working lock before we go. Once you are inside we check the lock still turns properly and that you have a key that works. If the lock was the reason you were stuck, we say so.

What the census means at the door

31%

Newer homes. About 31% of homes in Pickering were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Newer homes are built to standard bores and backsets, so nearly any modern deadbolt, lever set or smart lock fits straight on. The locksmith can offer a wide range of hardware knowing it will mount cleanly without new holes.

60%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 60% of homes in Pickering (2021 Census).

Mixed housing means a locksmith sees a bungalow in the morning and a condo tower in the afternoon. The stocked van has house-door deadbolts, suite-door cylinders and the finishes for each, so neither kind of customer waits for a second visit.

Schedule lock work at your Fairport home

Commercial customers in Fairport get a locksmith who understands traffic. A storefront door swings hundreds of times a day, and hardware chosen for a house will not last on it. We fit closers, lever sets and exit devices built for that use, adjust them so the door latches on its own, and schedule a service visit before anything wears out.

  • Straight talk about your options. We describe what each choice does and what it asks of you in effort, disruption and future flexibility, so the decision is yours.

  • Work explained as it happens. If you want to watch, we tell you what each step is for. If you would rather make a coffee, we give you the summary at the end.

  • Tidiness as standard. A lock change should not leave a mess. We bring what we need to keep the door area clean and we leave it that way.

Things people wonder about

Advice · (289) 275-9650

Why did my key break at all?

Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied.

Do longer screws really make a difference?

A large one. Factory strike and hinge screws are usually short enough to grip only the jamb, a piece of trim about an inch thick. Three-inch screws pass through the jamb and the gap behind it into the stud, so a blow has to move the wall rather than the trim. Lock manufacturers supply reinforcement plates with three-inch screws for exactly this reason, and note that a door beside a sidelight needs a different arrangement because glass sits where the stud would be.

Do I need a hub or a bridge?

Only if the model you choose uses one to reach the internet. Some locks have Wi-Fi built into the interior unit and connect straight to your router. Others save battery by using Bluetooth at the door and a small plug-in bridge nearby to relay to the network. Locks designed for a home hub join whatever hub you already run. The locksmith checks signal strength at the door itself and recommends the arrangement that keeps the lock reliably connected.

If the lock gets replaced, can the existing intercom or buzzer stay?

In most cases, yes. The buzzer, keypad and intercom are generally separate from the mechanical lock or cylinder, so replacing the lock itself does not usually mean replacing the electronic side too. Where the two are connected, such as an electric strike wired to the same frame as a new mechanical lock, the locksmith checks the fit and wiring before starting so the electronic system keeps working once the new hardware is in place. Anything that would need to change is explained beforehand.
