Smart Lock Installation

The kids get home before you do and the spare key has been lost twice this school year. A keypad they can tap, plus a message to your phone when the door opens, would take a daily worry off the list.

In plain words

A smart lock that came with the house is a special case, and a locksmith treats it as a fresh installation. The device is reset to factory state following the maker's procedure, which clears codes, paired phones and schedules, and then re-enrolled under an account you create. Any hub, voice assistant or automation that had permission to open it is checked separately, because those permissions can outlive a reset on the lock itself. The mechanical override cylinder is rekeyed so the previous owner's key becomes scrap metal. Batteries are replaced, firmware is brought up to date, and the door alignment is checked as it would be for new hardware.

Sound familiar?

Half the evenings someone asks whether the back door got locked, and nobody is sure. A lock that relocks on its own, shows its state in an app and reports when it was last opened would settle the question.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

Measuring the door and its holes

Smart locks are built around the standard residential preparation, so the locksmith measures before choosing. Door thickness is usually between 35 and 45 millimetres; thicker doors need an extension kit and very thin ones may need a different model. The large cross bore for the cylinder, the smaller edge bore for the bolt and the backset from the door edge to the centre of the hole are each checked against the new lock's range. A lever set also needs the handing confirmed. Steel and fibreglass doors, doors with a mortise pocket from an older lock, and doors with glass close to the handle each change what will fit and how it is mounted.

  2. 2

Preparing the door before the lock

Good installations start with corrections, not with the new box. If the bolt was dragging, the locksmith tightens or replaces hinge screws with longer ones that reach the framing, shims a hinge to lift a dropped door, and dresses the strike pocket so the bolt has room to seat fully. Weatherstrip that pushes the door out of square is trimmed or repositioned. If the existing holes are undersized for the new lock, they are enlarged with a hole saw and a jig so they stay centred; if a mortise pocket from an old lock is in the way, it is filled and re-drilled. The door is then closed and the bolt tested by hand before any electronics are unpacked.

  3. 3

A written record without your secrets in it

The visit closes with a plain note of what was done: the model fitted, the door corrections made, whether the strike was reinforced, which override cylinder was rekeyed and how many keys were cut, and which other doors were brought onto the same key. What the note never contains is a code, a password or a login; those exist only on your account and in your head. For a tenant, that record is the thing to share with a landlord so both sides know what hardware is on the door and that a working way in exists. For an owner, it simply goes in the folder with the house documents.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

Condition and fit of the door

A door that already closes true with standard holes is the simplest install. One that needs hinges shimmed, a strike pocket deepened or holes enlarged adds preparation time, and that work is quoted as its own line.

  2. 2

    Network setup

Joining the lock to Wi-Fi, adding a bridge because the signal at the door is weak, or pairing with an existing hub is setup time and sometimes an extra device, and appears in the quote as such.

  3. 3

Taking over an existing smart lock

Resetting, re-enrolling and cleaning the permissions on a lock that came with the property is a different job from fitting new hardware: less cutting, more account work, and it is quoted on its own footing.

Smart Lock Installation: questions

Advice · (289) 275-9650

Will a smart lock fit my existing door?

Most residential doors have the standard preparation these locks are designed around: a large hole for the lock body, a smaller one in the edge for the bolt, and a thickness between roughly 35 and 45 millimetres. The locksmith measures all three plus the backset before recommending a model. Thicker doors take an extension kit, thin or glass-panelled doors and older doors with a mortise pocket call for a particular model or some preparation, and all of that is sorted out before the box is opened.

Do I need a hub or a bridge?

Only if the model you choose uses one to reach the internet. Some locks have Wi-Fi built into the interior unit and connect straight to your router. Others save battery by using Bluetooth at the door and a small plug-in bridge nearby to relay to the network. Locks designed for a home hub join whatever hub you already run. The locksmith checks signal strength at the door itself and recommends the arrangement that keeps the lock reliably connected.

What happens when the batteries die?

The lock warns you well before that point, with a light or tone at the keypad and, on connected models, a message to your phone. If the warnings are missed, a keyed model's mechanical override still opens the door, while a key-free model instead has two small contacts on the outside where a nine-volt battery gives it enough power to accept a code. The locksmith shows you each route your model offers and where the spare batteries and the key should live.

What the census means at the door

31%

Newer homes. About 31% of homes in Pickering were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

In areas of recent construction, doors mostly carry builder-grade locks that were chosen for the whole development at once. They work, but a household that wants more can upgrade the cylinder or the whole set without any surprises about fit.

60%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 60% of homes in Pickering (2021 Census).

In an area with both houses and attached homes, the work varies by the door. A detached house wants all its exterior doors on one key; a suite door wants a cylinder that suits a metal frame and respects building rules. A locksmith carries parts for both.
