Freezing is one of the bigger seasonal causes of broken keys here. Meltwater runs into the keyway during a thaw and freezes overnight, so the plug is locked in ice, and most people respond by turning harder. The blade gives before the ice does. A winter extraction visit therefore begins with thawing: lock de-icer or gentle warmth frees the plug, then the fragment is drawn out and the cylinder is dried and given the lubricant its maker specifies. You leave with the piece out, a new key cut, and a small tube of de-icer so the next frozen morning is a pause rather than a snap.

How the visit goes

- 1
The half in your hand
The bow and stub you are holding are worth a look before anything else. The cuts on it identify the key blank and give most of the bitting, so a replacement can be read straight from it and the fragment once they are side by side. Its condition tells a story too: thinning at the cuts, a slight bend, a crack line or a shiny worn tip all say the key was near the end of its life. The locksmith also asks about spares. A crisp spare, or the key code tag that came with the lock, is a better pattern for the new key than any worn copy.
- 2
Drawing it out with a hook extractor
Every keyway has grooves, called wards, that run along its length above and below the blade. A hook extractor is a slim strip of spring steel thin enough to ride in one of those grooves beside the fragment. The locksmith slides it in past the broken piece, rotates it slightly so the barbed tip catches a cut in the blade, and draws it back out in a straight line. The pins are lifted clear as the piece passes them, exactly as they are when a key is withdrawn. It is a patient, felt process, and the cylinder is untouched by it.
- 3
A clear record for the landlord or manager
If the lock belongs to a rental unit, a condo or a workplace, you get a plain account of what was done: the fragment removed, the cylinder inspected and serviced, any key cut, and whether a rekey or replacement was recommended. Tenants and landlords in this province each carry obligations when locks are changed and keys are shared, so if the cylinder was replaced or rekeyed, the note records who now holds which key. For a property manager it closes the ticket cleanly; for you it means the next conversation about that door starts from facts rather than memory.

What affects the quote
- 1
Condition of the cylinder
Worn pins, a loose cap, grit or corrosion found after the piece is out may call for a service, a rekey or a new cylinder, each explained and quoted separately.
- 2
Weather on the day
A cylinder that is frozen or iced has to be thawed and dried before extraction can begin, so a call during a deep freeze carries that patient extra time.
- 3
Vehicle key electronics
Fitting a new blade to a chip head, or moving the chip and remote into a new shell, is separate from the extraction and quoted as such, as is any ignition check.

Broken Key Extraction: questions
Can the piece be pushed out from the other side?
On a standard door cylinder the keyway is closed at the back by the plug and the tailpiece, so there is no straight path through. What a locksmith can do is remove the cylinder, take off the cap, and push the plug out of its housing with a follower, which frees the fragment from behind. That is done on the bench, not by forcing anything from the inside of the door.
Why did my key break at all?
Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied.
Can a new key be made from the two broken halves?
Usually. Laid end to end, the halves show the full set of cuts and identify the blank, and a locksmith reads them with a gauge and cuts a fresh key to those depths on a code machine. That is better than tracing the broken blade on a duplicator, because a worn key copied is a worn key repeated. If a spare or the key code exists, that is used instead.

What the census means at the door
31%
Newer homes. About 31% of homes in Pickering were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In areas of recent construction, doors mostly carry builder-grade locks that were chosen for the whole development at once. They work, but a household that wants more can upgrade the cylinder or the whole set without any surprises about fit.
60%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 60% of homes in Pickering (2021 Census).
In an area with both houses and attached homes, the work varies by the door. A detached house wants all its exterior doors on one key; a suite door wants a cylinder that suits a metal frame and respects building rules. A locksmith carries parts for both.
