Car Key Replacement: getting ready
The key snapped at the head while you were turning it in a stiff, frosty door lock.
Pickering, Ontario · Locksmith · open 24/7

The key snapped at the head while you were turning it in a stiff, frosty door lock. Half the blade is in your hand, the rest is inside the lock, and the plastic head still lights up when you press a button.
Worth answering before the call
What is the year, make and model, and can you read the VIN from the windshield or the permit? What buttons did the old key have: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start? Was the key lost, stolen, broken, or damaged by water?
What is the small metal blade inside my smart key for?
It is the emergency key. When the fob's battery is flat, or the car's own battery has died and the doors ignore the buttons, the blade unlocks the driver's door mechanically. A small release on the fob lets it slide out. On a replacement fob the locksmith cuts this blade to your door lock and shows you where the keyhole is, since on some cars it hides under a cap on the handle.
Can a key be made for an older car with no chip?
Yes, for a vehicle that genuinely has no immobilizer, checked by VIN and equipment rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer and coded key. Where that is the case, it is the simplest key work there is: a blade cut to the factory code from the VIN or to a reading of the door lock, rather than copied from a worn original. If the ignition has become sloppy, the locksmith can rebuild it in the same visit.
