Vintage Mortise Lock Service in Glen Grove

The interior bedroom doors on the second floor have the original mortise latches, and none of them close any more. The doors drift open, the small brass turn buttons do nothing, and the keyholes have been empty for as long as anyone can remember.

In plain words

Where the door has moved, the lock gets blamed. Solid wood doors in older houses swell in humid weather, shrink in winter and settle on their hinges, and a mortise lock that was set decades ago ends up with its latch and bolt aiming a little below the strike. Part of every vintage lock service is reading how the door hangs, tightening or packing the hinges, and moving or filing the strike so the latch catches and the bolt throws without lifting the handle. Often that alignment work, plus a clean and new springs, is the entire repair, and the customer gets back a door that closes with one hand.

Sound familiar?

Someone painted the door years ago without removing the hardware. The faceplate, the strike and the little thumb-turn are all under several coats, the deadbolt scrapes when it moves, and the knob is stiff enough to leave marks on your hand.

  1. 1

Repair, replacement cylinder or replacement case

The last step of the check is deciding what the lock needs, in plain terms, before any of it is done. Most cases need cleaning, springs and adjustment, and that is the recommendation. A cylinder lock with a worn plug may be better served by a new mortise cylinder of the same thread and cam, keeping the case. A cracked case, a bolt worn thin or a hub broken through calls for a replacement case in the same pocket, and the locksmith measures for it on the spot. You hear which of these applies and why, and if the answer is a replacement case, the choice between a reproduction and a modern case is yours to make.

  2. 2

Cylinder work on a later mortise lock

A pin-tumbler cylinder on a mortise lock is serviced the same way as a modern one. The plug is pushed out with a follower, the old bottom pins are replaced to a new combination, and keys are cut to match, so a lost key stops mattering. If the plug is worn past rekeying, a new mortise cylinder is selected with the same thread length, the same cam shape and a finish close to the trim, and threaded into the case to the correct depth so the cam swings the bolt without binding. The set screw is seated into the cylinder's groove, and the key is tested with the case in the door.

  3. 3

A lock that feels new and looks old

What you get back is the door you had, with the lock working as it was designed to. The knob returns level with a snap, the latch catches when the door is pushed shut, the deadbolt throws with a light turn of the key or the thumb-turn, and the key goes in and out without a wiggle. Nothing on the face of the door has changed except that the brass has been cleaned where it was handled. The locksmith runs through each function with you from both sides before leaving, so the standard of what has been done is something you have seen, not something you have been told.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

Number of locks in the visit

One entry lock is the simplest case. A whole floor of interior latches, or the front and back doors together, is a longer visit, and each case is quoted on its own so the total is easy to follow.

  2. 2

    Missing or mismatched trim

Sourcing a knob, escutcheon or thumb-turn to match the survivors, from salvage or reproduction stock, is quoted as parts plus the search. Reusing your own trim from another door avoids that line.

  3. 3

    What is actually broken inside

A clean and new springs is the lightest job. A worn hub, a cracked lever or a part that has to be fabricated to match the original adds bench time, and the assessment names which applies before any of it starts.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Vintage Mortise Lock Service: questions

Advice · (289) 275-9650

My home is a designated heritage property. Does that change anything?

It reinforces the choice to service rather than replace. Where a property carries a heritage designation, changes affecting listed features can need extra sign-off, and original door hardware is occasionally among those features. A rebuilt mortise case with its original trim is preservation rather than alteration, and the locksmith's written record of what was retained and what was replaced is useful for your file.

Is it safe to keep a deadbolt that is keyed on both sides of the entry door?

It is better not to. A bolt that needs a key from inside can trap the household when a key is not to hand, and a door people leave the home through works better opening without keys or special knowledge. During service the locksmith fits a thumb-turn to the bolt tail or otherwise makes the inside release without a key, keeping the vintage lock and the clear way out.

Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?

Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead.

What the census means at the door

31%

Newer homes. About 31% of homes in Pickering were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Recent builds often have steel or fibreglass entry doors rather than solid wood. They resist warping and take hardware well, and a locksmith fitting a deadbolt or reinforced strike works with the door's construction so screws bite into something solid.

60%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 60% of homes in Pickering (2021 Census).

In areas of mixed housing, landlords may own a house here and a few units there. A locksmith can put all of it under one master system so the owner carries one key while each tenant's key opens only their own door.
